Future Fear

Father, I’ve seen you too soon.
Your eyes of passion
do not incite when you spot me.

I know I’ve done great things.
Disappointment, for you, should
come naturally by now.

Am I stuck in a slump?
Groceries for grandma.
I’m just as pathetic as you.

I hug you to alleviate my solace.
You squeeze and whisper
“Where’s that old spark a failure stole?”
